Swan Island

I had driven by a boat launch / dock area with a sign for "Swan Island Ferry" a few times and it's always been packed, so I decided to finally check it out.

Much to my surprise, it ended up being an amazing remote getaway that's practically in my backyard. There's hiking, camping, and kayaking opportunities with chances to see an abundance of wildlife, or evidence of wildlife at the very least. There's also a bit of history on the island with homes and a cemetery dating back to the 1800's. I only spent 4 hours on the island, due to the ferry schedule, but will be going back for more exploration.

ROBINSON-POWELL HOUSE: Built in the 1880's. Summer employees occasionally live in this house, which has a phone in it in case of emergencies.

GARDINER-DUMARESQ HOUSE: Built between 1758 & 1763, it's often called the “salt box” because of its architectural design. Benedict Arnold, Aaron Burr and General Henry Dearborn stayed here for a night.

Again, I'm obsessed with this road.
For being on an island, I was expecting more views of the water. This was one of the only views from the trail (not including the portions of the trail I haven't explored yet).
TUBBS-REED HOUSE: Built just after 1800. The square house is of the Federal period in architecture, with several interesting rounded corners inside.
This is the ferry that brings people to and from the island, which requires a reservation. You can also rent a kayak or take your own.
